What is the Golden Shot? Olive oil and lemon as a morning ritual

Olive oil on bread, sure. Olive oil in the pan, always. But olive oil on its own, in a glass, first thing in the morning? That is exactly the Golden Shot: two ingredients, one sip, one ritual. We served it for the first time on July 23 at the 20th Mindful Women’s Circle at the Volksgarten Club Wien.

What is the Golden Shot?

The Golden Shot is our olive oil and lemon shot. The recipe is deliberately short:

• 2 cl Sarmakinas Extra Virgin Olive Oil
• 2 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice

There is no room for more. It is served in a Lobmeyr cocktail or espresso glass. It made its debut at the Mindful Women Circle.

Where does the olive oil shot trend come from?

The olive oil shot has become a trend on social media. It was popularized by Kourtney Kardashian, who takes a tablespoon of olive oil on an empty stomach in the morning, and Hailey Bieber with olive oil and lemon.

Vogue and Health also report on the olive oil and lemon shot. We take the trend with a grain of salt: a hype doesn't make an oil any better. What matters is what is in the glass.

How do you make the Golden Shot yourself?

• Freshly squeeze the lemon, don't use bottled juice.
• Pour 2 cl of olive oil and 2 cl of lemon juice into a small glass.
• Stir briefly and drink it in one go.

The shot tastes fresh, green, and slightly sharp. The oil provides body, the lemon provides acidity.

What matters when it comes to oil?

With only two ingredients, there is nothing to hide a poor-quality oil. Nutritional medicine expert Frank Lipman puts it simply: If you make the olive oil shot, you should pay attention to the quality.
